Charcoal Kitchen
A dark, dramatic kitchen with a five-metre island.
[ Overview ]
A keen cook wanted a kitchen that felt like evening all day: dark, calm, and entirely about the food. We built smoked-oak cabinetry wall to wall, with a five-metre island in a single run of staves and a pantry behind pocket doors.

[ The challenge ]
What the room asked of us
A five-metre island in one piece does not forgive a twisted board. We laminated the top from quarter-sawn stock, rested it six weeks, and levelled it on site to half a millimetre.
[ Our approach ]
How we answered it
Smoked oak, ebonised details, blackened steel handles made by a local smith. Worktops in honed stone to contrast the timber, and lighting tucked under every shelf so the wood does the glowing.
